[en] Document Storage is a document repository on the Web. It allows you to store labels, forms, graphics, and other files. The latest revision of the files is always available to all connected NiceLabel users.

[en] Document Storage is based on WebDAV technology and requires updated support for Web Folders installed on each client computer. NiceLabel client installation prompts you to install the Web Folders. If you disregard this step, you will not be able to access documents from Document Storage.

[en] In some cases, you can access your documents in Control Center, but you can't access your documents from File Explorer. You get the following error message:


[en] You might also get a login screen when accessing your documents from File Explorer, but you are unable to log in.

[en] Solution

[en] WebDAV is a set of extensions to HTTP protocol. It provides a framework for users to create, change and move documents on a server; typically a web server or web share.

[en] NiceLabel Control Center provides WebDAV access to the files inside the Document Storage. All clients that interact with Document Storage must have enabled WebDAV support. Usually, the "clients" are NiceLabel Desktop Designer and NiceLabel Automation.

  • [en] Desktop Windows operating systems. The WebDAV support is already installed.

  • [en] Windows Server 2012 R2 operating systems. You have to enable the Desktop Experience feature.

  • [en] Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022 operating systems. You have to enable the WebDAV Redirector feature.


[en] Make sure that the following HTTP verbs are enabled on your Control Center server:

  • [en] HEAD

  • [en] OPTIONS

[en] Installing WebDAV support on Windows Server 2012 R2
  1. [en] Start Server Manager from the Start screen.

  2. [en] Click Manage, then click Add Roles and Features.

  3. [en] Select Role-based or feature-based installation. Click Next.

  4. [en] Select a local server from the server pool. Click Next.

  5. [en] The Desktop Experience feature is not a Server Role, so skip the Server Roles page by clicking Next.

  6. [en] In the Select Features section, expand User Interfaces and Infrastructure and check the Desktop Experience check box. Probably it will now ask you whether you also want to install the features required by Desktop Experience. Click the Add Features button to proceed. Now, click the Next button to proceed.

  7. [en] In the Confirmation section, optionally check the Restart the destination server automatically if required check box as the Desktop Experience feature will need a restart to complete. You can also manually restart the server after the wizard steps are complete.

  8. [en] Wait while the features are being installed. You can also close the Add Roles and Features Wizard window – it will continue to run in the background.

[en] Installing WebDAV support on Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022

[en] While installing Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, or Windows Server 2022 operating systems, you probably enabled Desktop Experience. So after you install your Server OS, you have to enable WebDAV Redirector.

  1. [en] Start Server Manager from the Start screen.

  2. [en] Open Manage menu and click Add Roles and Features.

  3. [en] Click Features tab.

  4. [en] Select WebDAV Redirector feature.

  5. [en] Click Next to proceed to the Confirm installation selections window.

  6. [en] Click Install. You can close the window while the feature is being installed.

  7. [en] Close Add Roles and Features window.

[en] Enabling WebClient Services

[en] On some machines, you also have to enable the WebClient Service to Automatic" Startup Type.

[en] Do the following:

  1. [en] Press Windows key (or <Ctrl> + <Esc>) to open the search.

  2. [en] Type in "Services" and run the Services window.

  3. [en] Locate the service WebClient.

  4. [en] Double click WebClient to open its properties.

  5. [en] In the Startup type combo box select Automatic.

  6. [en] If the service is not running yet, click Start button.

  7. [en] Click OK.

  8. [en] Close Services window.

[en] Enabling Portable Device Enumerator Service

[en] On some machines, you also have to enable the Portable Device Enumerator Service to Automatic Startup Type, when you want to use Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel data files from the Document Storage.

[en] Accessing documents in Documents storage from File Explorer

[en] To access your documents, use syntax: \\myservername@8080\DavWWWRoot\myfolder.

[en] If you can't access the documents, check if WebDAV Authoring Rules is enabled on the EPMWebDAV site in IIS. This might prevent you from accessing Documents storage from File Explorer.


[en] To resolve the problem, disable WebDAV Authoring Rules on the EPMWebDAV site. Double-click WebDAV Authoring Rules, then click Disable WebDAV in the Actions pane.
